Updated: PlayStation 4 launch dates revealed, SA now confirmed for 2013

Sony, at their press conference at Gamescom, announced many things. Among these were the launch dates for the PlayStation 4 console for both America and Europe.

American gamers will be getting their hands on some new PlayStation hardware on 15 November this year while European gamers will have to wait until 29 November to get their hands on Sony’s new plaything. A further 32 countries will be getting access to the PlayStation 4 before the end of 2013 and South Africa doesn’t appear to be one of the countries on that list.

However, paying a visit to the South African PlayStation website’s PS4 page shows that Sony is inviting gamers to pre-order consoles for 29 November. It seems to be generic branding so Stuff is waiting for official word on the matter from local distributors before getting excited.

It is possible that South Africa will be skipped in the initial PS rollout, in the same way that Microsoft’s Xbox One console will only be launching in SA on an unspecified date in 2014. Japan is another country that doesn’t yet have a launch date for Sony’s new gaming hardware.

Update: Ster Kinekor has said that South Africa should get the PlayStation 4 on 6 December this year, with an unofficial price of R6300 at this point. CEO Mario Dos Santos said “South Africa will be releasing the PS4 prior to Christmas, we are planned to go on the 6th of December 2013 due to the logistics of getting the stock to our shores.”
