News from Gamescom – Microsoft’s Xbox event (updated)

Europe’s gaming expo, Gamescom, kicks off today and first to make news is Microsoft with their Xbox media briefing.

There have been several announcements so far, such as a new online title based in the long-running Fable universe created by Lionhead Studios. The game, Fable Legends, will see players taking on the mantle of either hero or villain once again but no further details regarding gameplay are available. The title will be an Xbox One exclusive, as per usual for the series.

Activision’s Call of Duty: Ghosts also got a look-in at Microsoft’s conference with the announcement of dedicated servers for the game on the upcoming Xbox One console. A new game mode, called Blitz, was also introduced and will see players fighting for control of the opposing side’s location. When players reach a specific area in the enemy camp they score and are transported back to their starting point. Video footage of the game mode should become available soon.

Microsoft has announced that European pre-orders of the Xbox One console will receive FIFA 14 as part of their pre-order. It is unclear whether other territories, like South Africa, will receive a similar freebie when the console launches here in 2014.

Ubisoft’s motion controlled Fighters Within was also detailed. Fighters Within will be an Xbox One title that uses the Kinect 2 sensor to control onscreen battles. The way that the game has been described makes it seem like a refinement of Fighters Uncaged, a Kinect title from Ubisoft which didn’t fare too well when it was released on the Xbox 360. Punches, kicks and other “trigger” movements will translate into attacks for the game’s onscreen avatar.

Microsoft have opted to not livestream the Xbox event from Gamescom this year. Stuff will update once more information from Cologne, Germany becomes available.
