Location-sharing service Latitude from Google will be going away in a little over a month’s time, according to an official post from the internet search company.
On the block are “…Google Latitude in Google Maps for Android, Latitude for iPhone, the Latitude API, the public badge, the iGoogle Gadget, and the Latitude website at maps.google.com/latitude”, but the location-sharing function will still be available in a new form via Google+ for mobile devices. Android currently supports this and an iOS version will be coming at a later stage. Users will also have service similar to current Location Reporting and History options at their disposal.
What this means is that any apps using the Latitude API will have to undergo a bit of a redesign but it’s not likely that losing this feature will upset too many people. Latitude is not as popular as the now-defunct Google Reader was.
