Sony’s Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia C join the Xperia lineup

Sony Mobile today announced two new additions to its Xperia lineup of smartphones in the form of the Xperia C, a 5-inch handset intended for emerging markets, and the Xperia Z Ultra, a high-end smartphone which lays claim to the title of the world’s “…slimmest and largest Full HD smartphone display”.

The Xperia C is a dual-SIM handset which features a 5-inch qHD display (960 x 540), a quad-core 1.2GHz processor and 4GB of internal storage. Only 2GB of the internal storage will be available, making the microSD support (up to 32GB) a bit of a given. An 8 megapixel camera with Sony’s Exmor R sensor and Sony-specific options like the battery-saving STAMINA mode will be included in the Xperia C.

Exact pricing and launch for the Xperia C hasn’t been announced but it is expected to launch in September this year, under the R3,000 mark.

The Xperia Z Ultra scales up on the specs considerably and will be packing Qualcomm’s 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU, powering a 6.4-inch Triluminos display (1,920 x 1,080), 16GB of internal storage and support for up to 64GB of external storage (microSD). The smartphone will be water and dustproof, with an IP55/58 rating.

Sony will be introducing a feature with the device called X-Reality, which is an “intelligent super resolution display technology which analyzes each image and reproduces lacking pixels to optimize quality for the sharpest videos.” The Xperia Z Ultra will also have an 8 megapixel shooter with Sony’s Exmor R sensor.

Like the Xperia C, the Xperia Z Ultra will be launching in South Africa in September but there is no indication of what its price point will be.
