Russia is known for far more than just its awesome dash cam crash videos and the country is, through startup LiveMap, going to be doing a little more for motorcyclists by adding navigation functionality to motorcycle helmets.
Moscow-based company LiveMap is developing an Android-based augmented reality motorcycle helmet with GPS navigation, voice recognition and a heads-up display that is “projected right on the visor like in a F-35 fighter helmet [that] provides unobstructed view, doesn’t distract attention and eliminates the need for a separate display.” The company is presently crowdfunding pressmolds for the helmet capsule through IndieGoGo, where they hope to raise at least $150,000.
Other features of the helmet will include a light sensor for adjusting the brightness of the HUD based on external lighting conditions, a G-sensor, gyroscope and digital compass to be used for head tracking and a custom interface for the helmet’s operating system. The intended end result will be a motorcycle helmet that can be used to navigate to destinations on the go with the assistance of voice control. LiveMap hopes to have the motorcycle gear on the market by Q3 2014 and has already funded prototype components with the assistance of the Russian government.
