Local mobile developers wanted for July DevDays events

Tech4Africa, Deloitte Digital SA and Nedbank are getting together to run two developer days (DevDays) in the month of July and they’re looking for South Africa’s mobile developers to attend. The aim of the two events is to get S.A’s best mobile devs to “solve a unique and complex business challenge within 24 hours”, according to an emailed press release.

The two events are set to run a week apart, on 19 July in Johannesburg and then 26 July in Cape Town, and will cost R250 per developer registering according to the press release. The registration pages (linked above) have the cost slated as R285 at the moment however. The expense of attending a DevDay event will be offset by a R250 discount on registration for the Tech4Africa conference later this year.

The challenge, for which Nedbank is putting up a R35,000 cash prize for the best developer, will involve “tech which requires a mobile frontend using HTML5, Android app and/or feature phone; a web based backend with a web datastore; and messaging API’s which do push & pull requests.”

Tech4Africa founder Gareth Knight said “Aimed at giving techies a place to meet new people, try out new ideas, challenge themselves on problems, and generally geek out, these will not be your typical developer workshops with ties and a death by power point. We want to encourage speed, execution, new ideas, new technology, and disruption. There are no boundaries, no stack predilections, and no rules.”
