Windows 8 scales down with Acer’s Iconia W3 tablet

The smallest device yet to run Microsoft’s full Windows 8 OS was announced by Acer at Computex this past Sunday, 2 June. The new 8-inch tablet, the Iconia W3, is set to go on pre-order later this week starting at $379 (R3,820 or so).

It should end up justifying the cash users will have to spend on the tablet. The Intel-powered Iconia W3 will be packing a 1.8GHz Atom Z2760 CPU, a 720p 1,280 x 800 display and will be available in 32GB and 64GB flavours. It will also be preloaded with a full version of Microsoft’s Office Home & Student software at launch.

It may be the first 8-inch Windows 8 tablet but that won’t make using Office any easier on the relatively small display. To that end Acer will be also be offering an optional Bluetooth keyboard peripheral based around the keyboard found on Acer’s 13.3-inch notebooks for an additional $90 (R900).
