Google reported to be considering floating wireless networks for Africa

Google is working on a “multipronged effort” to bring wireless networks to emerging markets like sub-Saharan Africa, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The effort will reportedly see Google taking several approaches to achieving their goal, including the creation of cheap Android smartphones that would connect to the networks as well as “high-altitude platforms” in the form of blimps or balloons that would distribute wireless networks over a wide area. A satellite-based network might also be on the cards.

The search company is said to be in talks with regulators in South Africa and Kenya, among other countries, hoping to get rule changes made that would allow Google to construct the network.

When contacted the company’s possible plans for emerging markets, a Google spokewoman declined to comment.
