Electronic Arts secures rights to Star Wars gaming franchise from Disney

That didn’t take long. Disney recently shuttered LucasArts, the studio primarily responsible to Star Wars-related gaming titles, and said that they would be licensing the rights to make game’s based on the fictional universe.

The license has now been awarded to publisher Electronic Arts on an exclusive basis as part of a multi-year deal, the terms of which have not been disclosed. EA will be handing the series over to internal developer BioWare, which has made Star Wars titles in the past. The studio is also responsible for ongoing Star Wars MMO The Old Republic. Developers Visceral and DICE, who have worked on the Dead Space and Battlefield franchises respectively, will also be making games based on the Star Wars IP and upcoming first-person shooter Battlefield 4’s Frostbite 3 engine will be used for all upcoming Star Wars games.

EA’s Frank Gibeau said in a press release “Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe. Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay.”
