Microsoft’s share of tablet market up, Apple and Android still account for 90% – Strategy Analytics

Microsoft isn’t doing too badly in the tablet world since Windows 8 was launched last year, as far as operating systems go. Analyst firm Strategy Analytics has released figures showing that Microsoft’s performance as increased considerably since Q3 2012, when only 400,000 tablets bearing Redmond’s OS were shipped.

Since then Windows-based tablets have climbed, shipping over 3 million units in Q1 2013. This takes the Windows OS global tablet market share from 1.6% to 7.5%. This is still a drop in the bucket compared to Apple and Android but Microsoft is showing considerable improvement.

In the Strategy Analytics report branded tablet shipments climbed overall, from 18.7 million in Q1 last year to 40.6 million units in Q1 2013. Apple has maintained its lead in the global market but has seen its influence shrink from 63.1% to 48.2% year-on-year. Android has snapped at least some of that loss up, growing from 34.2% of the market last year to 43.4% in the reported quarter.
