Sony reveals slew of new products, TVs, monitors, media player

Sony has unveiled a series of products, some slated for a future release and others aimed at the market in the coming months.

Sony previewed new 4K monitors, TVs, and a 4K media player at the NAB 2013 event, giving some details on pricing and availability for at least some of the new tech. Unfortunately the release dates appear to be international for the moment so it seems local audiences are in for a bit of a wait for some 4K love.

Two new 4K monitors, that are going to be out of reach for the average consumer, were debuted at the event. A 30-inch, 4096 x 2160 and 56-inch, 3840 x 2160 prototype were demoed at NAB 2013 and Sony says that the 30-inch OLED hardware is going to be releasing some time next year. A bunch of new A-series Trimaster EL OLED monitors are on the cards from the company as well, replacing some older SKUs from the company.

Pricing for the XBR-55X900A 55-inch and XBR-65X900A 55- and 65-inch 4K Bravia TV sets were announced at the event. While still pricy, clocking in at $5,000 (R45,500) for the 55-inch model and $7,000 (R63,600) for its larger brother, they are still within the price range of avid display fanatics. The States will be getting the 4K units before the end of this month, on 21 April. When they will ship closer to home has not been announced.

A 4K media player and 4K video distribution services was also on the list of announcements. The FMP-X1 4K media player is slated for a release later this year, also in the States. Launching alongside the device will be “a fee-based video distribution service offering a library of 4K titles from Sony Pictures Entertainment and other notable production houses.” Those who purchase the device will not have to rely solely on the video service for 4K content though, eight films including Total Recall, The Amazing Spider-Man and The Karate Kid will be pre-loaded on the media player.
