Google Translate for Android is a handy tool when you’re in a communications bind but there isn’t always a data connection when you’re in a strange country.
Google have now accounted for this, launching offline support for the Play Store translation app. What’s more, they’ve spread that offline support over fifty languages “from French and Spanish to Chinese and Arabic.”
Users have the option to download language packs for the two (or more) languages that they wish to translate to and from. Once both the source and target languages are installed, via the Offline Languages option in the app’s menu, users can translate without having to worry about a data connection. The packs can weigh in at around 150MB each however.
The company says that the downloadable offline language packs are less detailed than the online offering but that they are “perfect for translating in a pinch when you are traveling abroad with poor reception or without mobile data access.”
