China takes the lead as the world’s biggest smart device market

China has overtaken the United States as the country that consumes the largest number of smart devices according to a report by Flurry Analytics.

The country now has the largest number of active Android and iOS devices, with the bypassing of the US taking place in the course of a month. In January this year China had 221 million active smart devices compared to America’s 222 million. That number has changed and Flurry estimates that the split will be 246 million to 230 million in China’s favour by the end of February.

Flurry claims that the States will not be able to win back their crown any time soon either, thanks to China’s far larger population. The only country with the potential to overtake China’s 1.3 billion people in terms of smart device ownership is India, which boasts a population of 1.2 billion. However this event will take a long time considering that there are only an estimated 19 billion smart devices in India at the moment.

Interestingly, South Africa is currently tenth on the list of countries with the fastest-growing number of active smart devices with a growth rate of 177% between January 2012 and January this year.
