Garmin goes from cars to dogs with the BarkLimiter

Garmin has revealed a product line that veers away from the GPS devices that they are known for, aiming instead for the canine training collar market with the BarkLimiter and Delta ranges of collars.

The BarkLimiter series of collars is designed to help dog owners stamp out nuisance barking, using “Advanced Bark Correction Technology”. Garmin claims that the collar “is able to distinguish between barking and other vocalizations” and it delivers “stimulation” accordingly when barking is detected. The ‘stimulation’ applied is steadily increased if the dog continues to bark but, if the dog has been quiet for a long enough period, it also drops a few levels to resume the training while the owner is not present.

The Delta series of collars adds training collar functions, including a virtual leash, to the bark collar in the case of the Delta Sport. The company is also offering the training collar functions as part of a standalone Delta collar. The Delta collar will retail for $200, the Delta Sport for $250 and the BarkLimiter for $80. The basic BarkLimiter features a changeable long-life battery that has a claimed 10 month lifespan while the BarkLimiter Deluxe ($100) has a three month lifespan rechargeable battery. The devices are waterproof in up to a metre of water for 30 minutes.
