Sony is demonstrating everything from new smartphones and smartphone features to display technology at CES this year but one of the most impressive bits of gadgetry is a TV that doesn’t officially exist yet.
Sony has a 56″ 4K OLED (organic light-emitting diode) television prototype on display, billed as the world’s first and largest 4K OLED TV and featuring a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160. The Ultra-High Definition (UHD) TV prototype uses oxide semiconductor TFTs to overcome limitations faced by scaling up the size of an OLED display. Conventional low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) thin-film transistors are not up to the task when screen acreage is increased. The television also makes use of Sony’s Super Top Emission tech, which has been previously seen in other Sony products.
Sony said in a statement “This prototype delivers all of the features expected from OLED TVs, such as high contrast, brightness, rapid video image response time and rich images produced even at wide viewing angles, all packaged in a large 4K resolution panel.”
Just when this 4K OLED TV will be available and at what sort of damage it will do to bank accounts when it launches isn’t known but, as it is merely a prototype, it probably won’t be appearing in stores this year.
