NPD: USA has more internet-connected devices than people

An NPD Group report, the latest of its Connected Home releases, has found that there are more internet-connected devices in American homes than there are American residents.

There are over 315 million people residing in the United States, according to figures from the US Census Bureau, but the NPD’s report has found that these people are using around 425 million devices in order to connect to the internet.

Estimates of the devices used to head online puts the desktop PC in first place with 183.8 million, smartphones trailing in second with 133 million devices active and 39 million game consoles taking third place. The report also found 31.8 million internet-connected tablets, 16 million internet-connected HDTVs, 12.9 million Blu-ray players and 8.5 streaming media units.

The information in the report is based on a survey of 4,000 American adults done in the last quarter of 2012 and it discounts e-readers, routers and anything that is capable of connecting to the internet that isn’t being used to do so.
