Microsoft acquires R2 Studios for the Xbox platform

Microsoft has apparently managed to push out both Google and Apple to acquire R2 Studios, a home entertainment startup that now seem destined to develop technology for Redmond’s Xbox platform.

The Wall Street Journal initially reported the acquisition and cites people “familiar with the matter” in saying that the startup was in talks with Google and Apple before Microsoft came along.

R2 Studios came about in 2011, founded by Slingbox creator Blake Krikorian, and has been developing new methods of displaying content on televisions. The technology fits in with Microsoft’s recent push further into the home entertainment sphere with the Xbox 360 console.

Microsoft has reportedly gained access to a handful of new patents for controlling some electronic devices with the acquisition. The terms of the deal have not been made public and Microsoft declined to comment when contacted.
