PS2 being retired in Japan

Sony is retiring the PlayStation 2 console in Japan, according to a report from Japanese gaming website Famitsu, which says that Sony have stopped shipping the console in that country.

Sony’s best-selling console, which has shipped over 150 million units since 2000, will no longer be available in Japan once current inventory is sold out. It is likely that shipments around the world for the console will also soon cease, especially since there have been relatively few new games released for it in the past two years.

The PlayStation 2 was the most-played console of 2008, an impressive feat keeping in mind that the PS3 and Xbox 360 had been around for a few years at that point. The PS2 has had an extremely good run over the past 12 years, selling 6.4 million units as recently as the fiscal year ending March 2011.
