Toshiba announces another new CMOS senor, this one hitting 20 megapixels

Toshiba is pushing its new sensors, first announcing a new 13 megapixel effort designed for mobile devices and now a new 20 megapixel CMOS image sensor aimed at the point-and-shoot market.

Toshiba’s new 1.12 micrometer TCM5115CL image sensor is “the industry’s highest resolution in the 1/2.3 inch optical format, using backside illumination technology (BSI) to improve sensitivity and imaging performance”, according to the company. It will feature improved video capture (60 frames per second at 1080p, 100 fps at 720p) to go along with the resolution bump.

The new sensor will begin sampling at the end of January next year and is expected to enter mass production by the end of August 2013.
