Vodacom rolls out LTE to Cape Town ahead of schedule

Vodacom has followed up the introduction of LTE services to areas of Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban by launching 4G access in Cape Town as well.

The rollout to Cape Town is a few weeks ahead of schedule, according to Vodacom’s chief technology office Andries Delport, and sees LTE being offered in Cape Town’ s CBD, Stellenbosch, the Atlantic Seaboard (including Camps Bay), the Waterfront and Century City. Additional coverage in the Mother City is planned for 2013.

Delport said “I’m bowled over with what our engineering teams have achieved. They worked incredibly hard to hit the 10 October launch date but rather than take a breather they actually accelerated the rollout from there. On average we’ve lit up another seven LTE sites every single day for the past two months and hit our target of 500 LTE base stations a month early.”
