Google’s top South African internet searches for 2012

Google has revealed which search terms were the most popular amongst South African citizens this year at the company’s annual Zeitgeist.

Taking top honours for SA is classifieds website OLX followed by the late Whitney Houston, who passed away earlier this year. Hurricane Sandy, which struck America’s East Coast in October, came in third.

The fourth most searched for term for the tip of Africa was South Korean musician PSY’s Gangnam Style, followed by the 2012 Olympics in fifth place.

Velvet Sky, Caster Semenya, Diablo 3, Khanyi Mbau and the iPad 3 fill out the sixth to tenth placed searches respectively.

In terms of pure tech search results, the iPad 3, Samsung’s Galaxy S3 and S2 took the top three most searched-for bits of tech respectively. Samsung, Nokia, iOS devices and BlackBerry fill up the remainder of the list, showing that South African tech-heads are extremely keen on their mobile devices.
