BBM 7 with BBM Voice leaves beta, available (very) soon

Research in Motion’s new version of BBM, BBM 7, has left beta and is headed to BlackBerry App World extremely soon. An updated version of the messaging service normally would not be that remarkable but BBM 7 introduces BlackBerry Voice, which permits free voice calls over WiFi to other BBM users.

RIM and BlackBerry are a little late to the party in offering VoIP calls with the BBM service, having been beaten to the punch by Google, Apple and Microsoft, but the new feature may stop some users from jumping ship.

RIM has said that BBM 7 is available now for handsets running BlackBerry 6 and higher with support planned for BlackBerry 5. They have also said that it may take as long as a day to appear on the store (it does not appear there at the time of writing) but it should be active fairly soon.

Inside Blackberry has released a video detailing how the new BBM works.
