Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 reaches $1 billion in 15 days

Black Ops II, the latest release in Activision’s Call of Duty series, has set a new record for entertainment sales by accumulating $1 billion after only 15 days on the market.

CoD: Black Ops II has beat out the previous record holder, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, by a single day. Modern Warfare 3 last year took  16 days to reach the $1 billion mark though both Call of Duty titles have managed the feat faster than the fastest-grossing Hollywood film release. Avatar took 17 days to reach the total at the box office.

Activision Blizzard CEO Robert ‘Bobby’ Kotick said in a statement “Since Call of Duty was launched, cumulative franchise revenues from players around the world are greater than current worldwide box office receipts to date for the top-10 grossing films of 2012 combined. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded worldwide theatrical box office receipts for ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Star Wars,’ the two most successful movie franchises of all time.”

Black Ops II has achieved over 150 million combined hours in online multiplayer played since it was released on 13 November this year.
