Peter Molyneux rebooting Populous with Kickstarter

Games industry veteran Peter Molyneux, as part of his new studio 22cans, is looking to reboot the god-game genre with a fresh take on the title that started it all, Populous. And he’s using Kickstarter to do so.

The project is to create a title for PC, Android and iOS called Godus, “…an innovative reinvention of Populous, the original god game and delivers exciting global co-operation, competition, creation and destruction to a whole new generation.”

The game is made out to be a compilation of past Molyneux titles, taking elements from Dungeon Keeper, Populous and Black and White to create something new in Godus. In light of the fact that most publishers would throw money Peter Molyneux’s way, the reasoning behind opting for Kickstarter has been given on the game’s pitch page:

With GODUS we want to make a game in a culture of openness, co-operation and honesty. Creating a game involves imagination and passion, and we’re keen to share the experience. So we want to make GODUS with you watching and, we hope, participating. Funding it via Kickstarter allows us to stay a small independent team with unlimited freedom in our creativity. It’ll just be you, us and our unbridled dedication (no publishers).”

22cans is looking for £450,000 to complete the project and the current total, with 28 days of funding to go, stands at a little over £100,000.
