The Oatmeal’s crowdfunded efforts help secure Tesla’s Wardencliffe

An Indiegogo fundraiser, arranged and promoted by The Oatmeal’s Matthew Inman, has been instrumental in allowing a group called the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe (formerly Friends of Science East) to purchase the location of Nikolai Tesla’s Wardencliffe facility.

The crowdsourced fundraiser, Operation Let’s Build a Goddamn Tesla Museum, hit its target way back in August this year but the non-profit group behind the effort to turn the location into a Tesla museum have now signed the papers and completed the purchase of Wardencliffe. The purchase of Wardencliffe from previous owners the Agfa Corporation was signed off last week Friday.

Additional funding will likely be required before an actual museum is erected on the site. The crowdfunding raked in a final total of $1,370,511, a little over $400,000 shy of the full amount for the facility and land. Half the total for the purchase was to have been subsidised by by a grant from New York State so it is just possible that there will be enough to get the museum started.
