Sharp begins production of HD-LCD phone displays

Sharp has announced that it has started production of 5″ full HD smartphone displays at the company’s plant in Kameyama, Japan.

In spite of financial difficulties the company began production of the 5″ 1,920 x 1,080 LCD panels at the end of September and plans to ramp up to full scale production this month. The new displays will feature the highest ppi (pixels per inch) seen in a mobile display to date, clocking in at 443ppi.

The company is quoted as saying “By providing ultra-detailed LCD panels to support the growing worldwide demand for smartphones, Sharp will contribute to smartphones with increasingly higher quality images.”

Sharp’s new screens are based off the company’s CG-Silicon layer-reducing tech.
