Several internet-based companies based in the US have banded together to form The Internet Association, an American lobby group dedicated to “…advancing public policy solutions to strengthen and protect Internet freedom, foster innovation and economic growth and empower users.”
The group is made up of fourteen companies, including the likes of Google, Facebook, Amazon, Zynga and Yahoo.
According to the group’s president Michael Beckerman The Internet Association will focus on privacy and piracy issues in Washington D.C. This is being done on the behalf of global internet users, according to an introductory video released by the group (below).
Beckerman said “It is the Internet’s decentralized and open model that has unleashed unprecedented entrepreneurialism. Policymakers must understand that the preservation of that freedom is essential to the vitality of the Internet itself and the resulting economic prosperity.”
