Sony reveals PS3 ‘super slim’ at TGS

Sony has announced two new editions of the PlayStation 3 console at this year’s Tokyo Game Show (TGS). The biggest change to both editions of the revised PS3 is a much smaller profile, taking the console from slim to ‘super slim’.

The latest version of the PS3 is 20% smaller and 25 percent lighter than the existing Slim console and there has been a reworking of the internal hard drives, which accounts for the two new models. One will feature a 250GB HDD, while the more expensive model packs in a 500GB HDD. Instead of a front-loading disc slot Sony have opted for a top-loading door panel.

Though South African (and European) pricing and availability of the new console is undetermined right now, there are dates and prices for the American versions.

The 250GB PS3 ‘super slim’ lands in the States on 25 September as part of a bundle that contains Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception and will be priced at $269 (R2,210). The 500GB variant will drop on 30 October and will be bundled with Assassin’s Creed III for $299 (R2,460) but South African buyers will likely have a bit of a mark-up tacked on when it lands on our shores.

Reports say that other territories will have the consoles on 28 September, hopefully South Africa is included in that launch date.
