Zuckerberg – A Facebook smartphone “doesn’t make any sense”

Despite persistent rumours that Facebook is working on a smartphone, Mark Zuckerberg said yesterday that a Facebook handset ” just doesn’t make any sense. That’s always been the wrong strategy for us.”

Zuckerberg was speaking at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference and went on to say that if Facebook were to make their own handset, which they apparently are not, the best the company could manage in sales of the hardware would be between 10 and 20 million units.

“That doesn’t move the needle for us”

Zuckerberg did mention that the company is moving ever more into the mobile space, saying that the social network eventually expects to make more money through the sale of mobile ads than it does from desktop advertising. At the moment almost all of Facebook’s advertising cash comes through its PC-based users.
