Windows Phone 8 launch is make or break for Nokia – analyst

Nokia and Microsoft are going to unveil new Windows Phone handsets tomorrow but at least one analyst has said that this event could be the thing that makes or breaks Nokia.

CCS Insight’s director of research Ben Wood has said “The challenge that Microsoft faces with the timing of the launch is that it risks being drowned out by the deafening noise generated by iPhone 5. That is going to be a challenge for Microsoft and its licensees, the most important of which is Nokia.”

“The phones need to have a wow-factor, which generates the kind of buzz that Samsung, Apple and others have been able to generate with new phone launches. If it fails to get that reaction at the time of the announcement, that does not bode well for the future of the portfolio.”

Nokia is rumoured to be launching the Lumia 920 and 820 Windows Phone 8 handsets at tomorrow’s event. The Lumia 920 is said to have a 1.5GHz dual core processor and a 4.5″ 1280 x 720 display, as well as an 8 megapixel camera. The 820 is expected to feature the same display resolution with a smaller 4.3″ screen.

Whether the launch of the new OS and new products will be able to stand out in the face of Apple’s expected iPhone 5 launch later this month, especially considering the huge number of devices being launched in September, is a question that will only be answered after 12 September.
