Acer not expecting spectacular performance from Windows 8

Acer is not expecting much of a performance from Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 operating system, citing a lack of excitement on the part of consumers for revising their opinion of the launch of the OS.

Acer CEO J.T. Wang said in an earnings call today that “We are still waiting for the signal of the consumers’ enthusiasm”, saying that the company expects “medium growth” compared to their original estimate that Microsoft’s new OS would cause a large uptick in new devices on the market.

“We see that a lot of PC brand companies and also the channels have a cautious attitude. Although everyone is preparing for the Windows 8 launch, but still there is a lot of reservation, and so we do not see the momentum for very explosive growth has been accumulated.”

Wang appeared to suggest that Acer is looking at revising its plans to make a line of Windows RT devices, saying “Our original plan is to introduce RT early next year. We have some projects ongoing. But we have to see what happened in the overall ecosystem.” He said that Acer had to wait for Microsoft’s official pricing of the Surface without elaborating further.

Acer has previously said that Microsoft’s Surface tablets, which are launching on the same day as Windows 8, will cause a “huge negative impact for the ecosystem and other brands may take a negative reaction.”
