Google being investigated by India’s Competition Commission over alleged anti-competitive practises

Google is being investigated for alleged anti-competitive practises in India by the country’s Competition Commission (CCI) which deals with antitrust matters. This follows complaints from a consumer watchdog group, Consumer Unity & Trust Society (CUTS) International.

Associate director at CUTS Udai Singh Mehta said today that the watchdog approached the CCI in investigate potential misuse of Google’s dominance in online search and related advertising in India. This was reportedly prompted by investigations into Google by the European Commission as well as antitrust investigations elsewhere, leading CUTS to believe that something similar may be occurring in India.

Google has said in a statement that the company will be complying fully with the investigation and that they are confident that their practises are within the bounds of law in India. Part of the statement reads: “Though competition is always a click away – we understand that with success comes scrutiny.”
