IBM’s latest research lab announced, based in Africa

IBM has announced today that the company will be setting up a new research lab. On the surface the computing giant’s choice of Nairobi, Kenya for the research lab’s location might seem a little strange but as the country will soon be joining the ranks of those who possess supercomputers, IBM’s choice doesn’t seem that unusual.

IBM will be, as AllThingsD puts it, “solving complicated problems” with the new lab, possibly to do with the company’s Smarter Cities initiative which examines large infrastructure problems like transportation systems.

IBM’s move to the region should bode well for the fledgling iHub supercomputer project, while at the same time providing native Kenyans with opportunities to put newly-learned skills into practise.
