Google cutting around 4,000 jobs at Motorola Mobility

Google is reportedly reducing the size of Motorola Mobility by some 20% of the workforce. Around 4,000 jobs will be made redundant, according to a report from AllThingsD, and a Motorola representative is quoted as saying:

“While Motorola expects this strategy to create new opportunities and help return its mobile devices unit to profitability, it understands how hard these changes will be for the employees concerned. Motorola is committed to helping them through this difficult transition and will be providing generous severance packages, as well as outplacement services to help people find new jobs.”

Google is also planning on closing down a third of the facilities that Motorola Mobility occupies. The premises in Sunnydale in California, Chicago and Beijing are locations unlikely to be touched much by this move.

Google has yet to announce what it plans to do with Motorola Mobility following its acquisition. The company has only said that they will be focused on fewer products in future.
