Toshiba looking at creating ‘fusion products’

Toshiba is reorganising parts of the company in Japan, moving some production out of the country and bringing television product designers together with those involved in creating tablets and PCs to create something called ‘fusion products’.

These products will “combine traits from the traditional categories of TVs, tablets and computers” and this will see televisions and computers being developed together at a facility in western Tokyo. Around 1,000 of the design and development staff is expected to be relocated, according to a press release from the company.

Toshiba is also planning on moving television manufacturing outside of Japan to less costly regions like Indonesia or Egypt. TVs are the company’s major drain on funds, last year costing Toshiba 50 billion yen in operating losses.
