Nikon recalls D800 and D7000 DSLR battery packs. Again

Nikon started a recall on battery packs used in the D800 and D7000 DSLR cameras back in April this year but it seems as though nobody got the message. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC) has restated the call for the battery packs, saying that they constitute a burn hazard.

The affected battery packs can apparently short-circuit, first overheating and then melting. For once the problem isn’t confined to overseas as there are some 5,100 units in the United States, another 1,100 in Canada and the remaining 195,000 are distributed worldwide.

If you are using an EN-EL15 battery pack (instructions on how to identify the battery are here) then you can contact Nikon SA for a replacement.
