The FBI shut down the temporary servers that were set up in the wake of the DNSChanger malware late yesterday, killing internet access to some 42,000 PCs in the States that were still directed towards fake DNS servers.
The FBI estimated that there were 211,000 IP addresses pointed at the temporary ‘safety net’ when it was shut down yesterday, of which 42,000 were American. It has been suggested that the total number of machines affected globally is higher than the FBI estimate.
The temporary servers were initially only supposed to operate for 3 months but a court ordered a 120-day extension to allow infected users to be contacted.
