RIM CEO Thorsten Heins has made several comments on the state of the company that show either a very optimistic outlook on the BlackBerry manufacturer’s trajectory or one that refuses to acknowledge that there is a problem.
Speaking in an op-ed piece for Canada’s Globe and Mail, published 3 June, Heins said that “…we believe RIM is a company at the beginning of a transition that we expect will once again change the way people communicate”, saying that the recently-delayed BlackBerry 10’s release will lead the company to “…expect to empower people as never before.”
In an interview with CBC Radio Hein said, “There’s nothing wrong with the company as it exists right now. I’m not talking about the company as I, kind of, took it over six months ago. I’m talking about the company (in the) state it’s in right now. This company is not ignoring the world out there, nor is it in a death spiral.”
RIM’s recent performance and the delay of BlackBerry 10 seems to suggest otherwise. So does the laying off of 5000 staff following their recent financial results and the loss of a manufacturing partner.
Hein has said, ““Yes, it is very, very challenged at the moment — specifically in the U.S. market. The way I would describe it: We’re in the middle of a transition. All that is in the making, it’s in the works. This company is in the middle of it and I’m positive we will emerge successfully from that transition.” Whether RIM can weather the current storm remains to be seen (it might) but stating that there is nothing wrong with the company probably won’t be that helpful.
