Microsoft looking to patent emotion-targeted ads

Microsoft has another patent application pending, this one dealing with delivering targeted adverts to internet users based on their emotional states.

Microsoft originally filed the patent at the end of 2010 and it deals with a “computer system, a computer-implemented method, and computer readable media configured to target advertisements based on emotional states”. A user’s online activity would be linked to an emotional value and then advertising content would be delivered based on that value.

Just how the algorithm will work is a mystery but the level of user tracking involved would likely cause some privacy concerns. Microsoft may be planning to link this system to their Smartglass project as a way of delivering ads to a base of users that they have control over however. Provided the patent is granted, that is.
