LG launching new 5″ 440ppi LCD screen

LG have announced the development of what they call the world’s first full HD LCD smartphone panel. The 5 inch screen is expected some time in the second half of this year and looks to compete with Apple’s Retina Displays by offering a whopping 440ppi pixel density.

The full-HD screens make use of AH-IPS or Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching tech and brings an HD TV-worthy 1920 x 1080 resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio to mobile screens in addition to the 440ppi pixel density. Apple’s Retina Display, by contrast, hasn’t improved much over its initial ppi of 330 since it was launched with the iPhone 4.

Executive vice president of LG Display Sang-Deok Yeo said, “As smartphones become increasingly valued for how well they do multimedia and with the rapid growth of LTE enabling faster large file transfers, our new 5″ Full HD LCD panel is certain to prove a significant asset to the mobile market.”

According to LG the AH-IPS tech means that “the naked eye is unable to distinguish between individual pixels”on the display. The screen  is not slated for use in any device just yet but it is only a matter of time before most 5” displays look upon LG in envy.
