Apple looking to take on Instagram with iCloud update

Apple is reportedly working on an update to its iCloud service that will feature functionality similar to that of the recently-acquired-by-Facebook Instagram photo-sharing service.

The update is expected to be officially announced in June at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference, according to the original Wall Street Journal report. The report cited unnamed sources who claimed that the update would allow iCloud users to share sets of images that can be viewed and commented on by other users.

The iCloud update will apparently form part of iOS 6 and will syncronise videos, “Notes” and “Reminders”. There are also rumours that iPhoto 12 will be arriving for the Mac at about the same time, which the Journal report seems to support.

If these unconfirmed reports are true then it looks like Apple will be pushing further into the cloud this year, along with Google and Microsoft’s efforts in that direction.
