Does it count as a new idea if it’s been around for ages? Google Docs has introduced an all-new feature — if you’re just looking at Docs. It’s been around in other apps for ages — Firefox, Chrome, and Microsoft Excel. Basically, anything coded after 2008…

We’re talking about tabs, of course. Odds are you’re reading this article in one. That magically innovative feature is headed to your Google-hosted documents. Why? More effective document navigation. We’re sure it doesn’t make it easier for Gemini to read your work or anything.

What’s up, Google Docs?

The stated reason for adding document tabs to Google Docs is to “help you organize longer documents, centralize information, and make collaboration easier.” Those all seem like great things to have if you’re a Docs user looking to improve their efficiency. No amount of switching-between-info functionality will help some users — the kind who lump everything into a lumbering mega-document that might destroy an entire company if it’s ever deleted — but there’s hope for the rest of us.

Provided you’re in sales, management, or possibly HR. Those are the careers Google has chosen to highlight what’s possible with the new tabs feature but it all boils down to subdividing information so it’s easier to access pertinent data. It’s not just confined to a few tabs, either. The feature will allow for sub-tabs, meaning you could drill down information until your document looks like a CD Projekt RED dialogue tree.

Tabs will open a left-hand pane that will make navigation even easier and users also have the option to assign emoji to each tab to somehow signify what it’s all about. Google’s feature will offset everyone’s diminished long-form information processing capacities from today, with a full rollout expected to take until about 24 October. If you don’t have it now, you’ll have it soon.

Listen up all you tab goblins. You know who you are, the people who managed to accumulate 38 different tabs at any one point while using Google Chrome. It’s messy, it’s chaotic and it needs to be reigned in. If you’re not gonna take control over all your pointless tabs the least you could do is organise them so everything looks just a little neater. Fortunately for you, Google has updated Chrome to now support a “Group Tabs” option and we’re here to show you how to use it.

Up To Date

So the first thing you’ll need to do is update your Chrome browser. It’s pretty straightforward stuff but if you’re anything like us, you haven’t done it in years. To start, click on the three vertical dots in the top right of your Google Chrome browser. Select “Help” and then “About Chrome”. That’s all you need to do to get that CPU guzzling browser to update as the rest of the process is automatic. Honestly, it’s so simple and straightforward that you probably should have just done that ages ago, right?

There might be a chance that even after updating Chrome the Group Tabs option isn’t showing for you. If that’s the case, just type “chrome://flags/#tab-groups” into the address bar and you’ll be presented with an option to enable the feature on. Easy peasy!

Tab neatness is next to godliness

So to begin setting up groups for your tabs, the first step is to open Chrome. Wild, right? Bet you didn’t expect us to start there. Once you’ve managed that tricky hurdle, right click on the open tab and select “Add to New Group”. At this point you’ll see a cute little coloured dot appear next to the tab.

Say you really want to get into the weeds with the tab grouping. You might as well go the extra mile and change the name of the tab group and even the colour. Just click on that little coloured dot to begin customising your new group. There are even a whole load of other options such as the option to add more tabs or even move the group to another window.

So you no longer have an excuse to have all those open windows populated with useless tabs. The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Just…promise you’ll use this nugget of information to get better?

Soon the days of dozens of stray, disjointed tabs littering your Chrome will be a thing of the past as Google has announced that the new beta version of their widely used browser will soon support the ability to both group and customise tabs.

If you’re anything like us, and if you’re reading this you’re probably a little bit like us, you’ll know doubt have struggled with your collection of open tabs at some point. We’re not talking about the soft drink either, we’re talking about the rampant collection of tabs you have open at any given point on your browser. It’s a problem, we know. We always lose what we’re looking for as we sift through tens of different tabs. Some have relevant information, some have a collection of email sites and others still are populated only with fire memes. It can be a real jumble but an in-bound update for Chrome is looking at removing that problem for good. Or at least making it a little easier to manage.

In the current beta version of Chrome, tab management has been implemented to maybe not rid you of your bad habit but rather make it much tidier. By simply right clicking on a tab, you can group it with other tabs that are focused on similar topics. Moreover, you can colour code these tab groups and give them custom names. You can even use emojis in place of words if you’re so inclined.

Google has confirmed that they’re slowly rolling out the new feature in new versions of Google Chrome which should be reaching us sometime in the remainder of this week. If you’re absolutely desperate to try out this new feature, there’s a preview build you can access in the latest build of the Google Chrome Beta. Sure, it might be far less satisfying to close a handful of tabs rather than a dozen after completing a project, but browser neatness is its own reward.
