We’re not expecting Street Fighter 6 to sell particularly well. Not because it’s bad – far from it. But we do have to question Capcom’s thought process when choosing release dates. Not only is it competing with kids’ pocket money (which almost definitely went to Tears of the Kingdom) but it’s going up against the launch of Across the Spider-Verse on its opening day (tickets cost how much?). But that’s okay. Capcom is hoping that its newly released Street Fighter 6 demo can salvage some of the damage.

Hadouken!

At the time of writing, the Street Fighter 6 demo is only available on PlayStation 4 and 5, though demos for the Xbox Series X/S and Steam are set to appear in their respective stores on Wednesday, 26 April. The news comes from Capcom’s Street Fighter 6 showcase – held yesterday – which also gave us some more news about the game’s features and post-launch future.

Players can download the demo for free, create their own custom avatar and test out the demo’s limited single-player World Tour Mode as their custom avatar. It’s worth noting that your custom avatar can be carried over to the full game should you decide to pick it up on the same platform, or even at all.

If you’re not after any story, you can access the ‘Fighting Ground’, which lets players go ‘One on One’ or into an ‘Extreme Battle’. You won’t be playing online with any friends, and you’ll be locked to Ryu and Luke for the duration of your stay at the Street Fighter 6 demo.

Too Lil, too late

The Street Fighter 6 showcase, hosted on 4/20 by the Lil Wayne (don’t ask) showed off a few more features we can look forward to once the full game is released. We know that four new characters – Rashid, A.K.I, Ed, and Akuma – are making their way to the game over the coming year. Those custom avatars we mentioned? They’ll be usable online in “Avatar Battles” which… is exactly what it sounds like. Finally, we learned that the single-player World Tour mode will incorporate some sort of RPG system, accompanied by a skill tree.

That’s just the basics. If you’re able to stand Lil Wayne for more than a couple of minutes, check out the full showcase. Or, you know, check out the PlayStation Blog. That’ll also keep you in the loop.

If you’re in the market for some free shooter action, we have some good news: the demo for Outriders drops today.

Publisher Square Enix has announced that from 7pm local time (5pm GMT/6pm CET/9am PT for those of you reading from abroad), the opening chapter of the game – billed as a “high-intensity RPG-Shooter” – will be available to play on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC (via Steam) and GeForce NOW.

The demo features a chunky three hour’s worth of content in which players can create multiple characters and try out all four classes in the game: Devastator, Pyromancer, Technomancer and Trickster.

We could go into detail about these classes, but you probably all want to watch the video instead.

There’s no word on how big the demo is to download is going to be, but the good news is that if you purchase the game on the same platform you play the demo on, your progression will be carried through to the game when it launches on 1st April this year.

Outriders has some serious pedigree

We have to confess, we’re pretty excited about Outriders. The reason being is that it’s made by People Can Fly, a developer who has yet to make a game that is anything other than exceptional. For those who haven’t heard of them, this is the studio that produced the awe-inspiring Painkiller, the criminally underrated Gears Of War: Judgement and Bulletstorm – arguably one of the finest shooters ever made on the last generation.

Outriders has a lot to live up to – here’s hoping the demo that lands this evening doesn’t crush our hopes. We’ve had enough of that sort of thing recently…

When a game consistently makes the player ask, “What the Hell is going on?” there a two possible ways that can go.

Either, they’ve been consumed by the story and are shocked at the twists unfolding before them; it’s not uncommon, for example, to ask such questions when playing a Metal Gear Solid entry. Yet there are also games that prompt the question in a way that’s less fun. Left completely in dark as to what is going on, what you’re expected to do and even why you’re playing it in the first place, Balan Wonderworld is one such game.

Publisher Square Enix has touted Balan Wonderworld as a game that’s paying homage to the by-gone era of 3D-platformers. The kind of games that flooded the PS2 so badly most developers won’t be caught dead making another one. Yet Balan Company, the developer of the titular wonderland are taking a crack at it, backed by the power couple of Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima, the guys famous for making Sonic The Hedgehog.

I played two hours of Balan Worldworld last night and I’ll be honest with you, I don’t particularly want to go back and play more. Two hours satiated any desire I had to dwell within maestro Balan’s magical wonderworld. It’s a game that feels designed with the mindset of “more is more”; like the developers were afraid to disappoint folks who suggested ideas so instead just threw every suggestion into a pot and hoped the eventual stew would taste good.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t taste good. It tastes fine at best. Admittedly I do tend to pile on the salt, but that’s personal preference.

Balan? I’d prefer some balance

The demo allows players to experience a vertical slice of what Balan Wonderworld has to offer. You can dive into what I assume is the complete first act of the game with later acts opening up upon its completion, albeit with a limit on the actual levels you can play.

I’ll be up front and say that there’s a genuine sense of creativity and wonder in the game. The levels are bizarre and often surreal mashups of reality. There are some interesting visuals at play here, my favourite being a flying blue whale with metal gears powering it through the air.

It’s clear that the designers had a lot of fun coming up with concepts for the various stages and I’m interested to see what the final version of the game brings. Yet when describing the game to Stuff‘s Digital Editor Marcé she remarked that it sounded like a 3-year-old was telling a story that someone happened to illustrate in real-time. This is a perfect description of this game’s presentation.

Beyond that creativity I can’t say I enjoyed actually playing Balan Wonderland. Everything the player can do, every input and action, feels sluggish, which is ironic, given the background of its developers. The worlds are vibrant and filled with music with dancing being a theme that permeates throughout each world. That vibe, that energy is lost when it takes what feels like a solid two seconds to actually begin running and the default jump feels less enthusiastic than my grampy at a comic book convention.

Of course, the movement of the game is modified by a wide range of costumes the player can don to bestow upon them several unique abilities. The final version of the game will supposedly have 80 different costumes but the demo only had a fraction of that. What genuinely surprised me was the diversity of the powers each costume offered. Out of the ten or so I tried every one felt different and served a different purpose which is neat.

FeelsBalanMan

Yet even this collection of skills doesn’t change the overall game feel. Balan Wonderworld needs an injection of speed otherwise the energy it’s working so hard to generate with the visuals just falls flat. I also need to mention that I desperately hope the final game has a wider range of music to enjoy because the levels I played had one track play on loop for each. Which is fine if the track itself isn’t roughly 30 seconds long in levels that can take ten minutes to complete if you’re looking for all the collectibles.

It also didn’t look great on a technical level. The amount of pixilation that occurred throughout the levels I played made Balan Wonderworld look even like the PS2 games it’s inspired by. One has to hope that the seeming lack of anti-aliasing on the PS4 version of the game is a problem exclusive to the demo because otherwise it does that interesting world design no favours at all.

I think my biggest issue with Balan Wonderworld after playing the demo is that it’s a game that’s trying really hard to convince you that it’s fun but not actually putting in the effort to be fun. All the elements it throws at the player, including the bounty of costumes and powers and the erratic, irreverent should be fun but they just feel like window-dressing because actually playing the game is… boring.

There is a flying blue whale powered by steampunk-like gears soaring through the skies above your head and yet Balan Wonderland still feels boring. Younger audiences might be captivated by the visuals alone but given the vast array of costumes and specific puzzles that require them, this doesn’t feel like it would be enjoyable even for a youth. Perhaps I’ll be young by the time this game releases properly on 26 March.

Code for Balan Wonderworld‘s demo was supplied by the publisher and played on PS4.

Let us once again wade into the pool of objective coolness as we talk about the world of skateboards, grinding, shedding and…kickflips, I think they’re called? Everyone’s had their jimmies rustled at the prospect of returning to two of the most beloved (and formative) video games of all time as the remaster of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2 is set to tickle tummies all across the world when it releases later this year. You won’t have to wait that long to experience the game first-hand though as a demo is dropping a full month before the game launches…kind of.

See, to get access to the demo you’ll need to preorder the game which is kind of cheeky. Considering the point of a demo is to test out whether or not you’d actually like to purchase and a play a game, it seems that Activision has taken the other way round and will be using a purchase for players to test out and then play the game. Which is…pretty underhanded. Look, I guess you could preorder, play the demo when it launches on 14 August and then cancel the order if you really hate the experience but that’s so much effort. Would have just been way easier to release a free demo as marketing, right?

Beyond the announcement of a demo dropping for overly-eager fans in August, Activision has announced that the game’s original roster will be bolstered by an additional 8 pro skaters all pulled from current headlines, unlike all those old farts like Tony Hawk. Newcomers include “Nyjah Huston, Leo Baker, Leticia Bufoni, Aori Nishimura, Lizzie Armanto, Shane O’Neill, Riley Hawk, and Tyshawn Jones” as reported by Engadget.

So not only will fans receive all the faithfully recreated components of the original games but some new elements too. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skate 1 & 2 is looking like an utterly fantastic game and even us folks that were a little too young to appreciate the game back in the day are excited to experience the remaster in all its nostalgic glory. The game is out on 4 September on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
