Set in the parallel worlds of South Africa and the supernatural world of African gods and divine beings, the six-episode series will feature the mystical and supernatural in a setting viewers might not have previously encountered.

Netflix is making an effort for local stories

Nigerian-born Akin Omotoso, the show’s creator, also serves as director and executive producer for this project. He’s joined by EPs Robbie Thorpe and Stan Joseph and directors Rolie Nikiwe, Tosh Gitonga, and Stephina Zwane.

If Netflix’s synopsis is accurate (why wouldn’t it be?), this sounds like something that’s worth looking out for if.

“Set in modern-day South Africa, this captivating supernatural series is inspired by the rich mythology of African gods and divine beings. It tells the story of ordinary township girl Ntsiki, who discovers she is a mystical being who must harness her powers to protect the community and avenge her sister’s murder.”

Sthandile Nkosi, Nomalanga Nkosi, and Tony Kgoroge star as Ntsiki Gasa, Ayanda Mbatha, and Luthando Mbatha respectively. They are joined by, among others, the legendary Yule Masiteng. You might have seen him in The Legend of Tarzan (2016) or Lord of War (2005).

The Brave Ones is set for release on 16 September 2022 on your nearest Netflix-capable device.
