It took time for Motorola’s Razr 60 smartphone to launch in South Africa. Hopefully, the wait for the Razr 70, newly seen in leaked renders, won’t be quite as long. Even if it takes its time, however, we’ve already got much of the 70 on sale here at home.

The folks at YtechB have seen what look to be official renders of Motorola’s upcoming foldable, combining it with a series of leaked information for a comprehensive overview of the unreleased handset. The images show all three colour options — Sporting Green, Hematite, and Violet Ice — while the other details flesh out what is seen in the visuals.

The Razr 70’s edge

Rumoured specs for Moto’s upgrade peg the Razr 70 as having a 6.9in 1,080 x 2,640 internal display and a 3.63in 1,056 x 1,066 external. That puts it up against Samsung’s Galaxy Flip range here at home, which starts at R28,000. We expect Motorola’s offering to be cheaper. How much cheaper remains to be seen.

An octa-core processor and a choice between 8GB, 12GB, and 16GB of RAM are expected. Storage options range from 256GB to 1TB. Dual rear cameras, both packing a 50MP sensor, and a 32MP front-facer could also launch with the phone. The final detail: a 4,500mAh battery should power the entire show.

Believe it or not (believe it), that’s not much of an upgrade over the Razr 60. The 70’s processor is likely to be an upgrade of the Dimensity 7400X found in the older phone. The only other significant update appears to be the secondary rear camera sensor. Whether the 13MP-to-50MP tweak is enough to get folks to buy the phone again will depend heavily on whether they bought the previous version.

Currently, the Razr 60’s cash price in South Africa is R13,000. That’s quite reasonable for a clamshell foldable. The Razr 70 will probably launch at closer to the R16,000 introductory price when (or if) it gets here.
