OnePlus announced today that it will not releasing a new phone this year and will be replacing OxygenOS for OnePlus devices and ColorOS for Oppo devices with a “unified and upgraded global operating system.” The company’s CEO Pete Lau confirmed this in a press briefing for its unified OS announcement.

OnePlus have released a T version of its number flagship range since 2016’s 3T which is usually an incremental upgrade to the existing flagship range. Well, not this year. The next flagship device we’ll see from them will be some time next year. It will ship with the new OS that’s been in development since the merger with Oppo in June.

That isn’t to say we won’t get a smartphone from the company at all. Well, we here in South Africa won’t, unless you want to import one. But the rest of the world could be seeing the OnePlus 9RT.

South Africa doesn’t get nice OnePlus things (again)

The R-range is OnePlus’ entry-level flagship series, the 9RT will be a slight refresh over the 9R which is a watered-down version of the other numbered devices. It’s still a rumour at this point but if you’re a fan of the company, you might see it as soon as next month.

Lau details the future of OxygenOS and ColorOS in a blog post. But the long and short of it is the next device — and presumably, the next Oppo device as well — will not feature OxygenOS or ColorOS as it is now but a new, unified OS.

This new OS will combine the fast, minimal and efficient design of OxygenOS with the stability and feature-filled ColorOS. Well, that’s the idea anyway. OnePlus has had some pretty big ambitions since its conception and, so far, it has pretty much met and exceeded them. It will be interesting to see if the company can continue that trend.
