Its larger pixel size significantly boosts light intake, ensuring precise colours and fine detail even in low-light scenarios. Colour consistency is maintained seamlessly when switching between the main, ultra-wide and telephoto lenses.

From dramatic backlit portraits to the subtle tones of a sunset, capturing detail across extremes of light and distance has long posed challenges for smartphone photography. The HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro addresses this with advanced DCG HDR technology, enhancing dynamic range by up to 300% to preserve both highlight detail and shadow colour without distortion.

At the same time, its 5cm telephoto macro capability brings added versatility, allowing users to move effortlessly between intricate close-up shots and crisp long-range photography, transforming everyday scenes into striking, detail-rich images.

Designed to go further, built to last

Equipped with 2nd Generation Kunlun Glass, the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro display features high-strength nanocrystals for enhanced durability. It offers up to 20x greater drop resistance than conventional glass, significantly reducing the risk of screen damage.

The back panel is crafted from ultra-durable vegan fibre, offering a silky-smooth texture that feels refined and elegant in hand. Its impact resistance is enhanced by up to 5x, allowing the device to withstand daily bumps and scrapes while maintaining its pristine appearance.

With IP68 water resistance and IP69 resistance to high-temperature, high-pressure water jets, along with a multi-layer sealing design, the device delivers comprehensive protection against water and dust intrusion.

It’s been literal years of smartphones fielding 5,000mAh batteries. Now, rumours indicate that Huawei plans to increase that baseline all the way up to 7,000mAh.

The rumour comes via Digital Chat Station, a Chinese leaker with a fair track record for accuracy. It doesn’t go into heavy detail about which specific handsets can expect a battery upgrade, but we can be certain that they haven’t been launched yet. There’s no way to increase battery capacities via software update, after all.

Huawei getting enough power?

According to Digital Chat Station, “the large battery of [Huawei’s] mid-to-high flagship line is also being molded. The 9 series chip is currently testing a maximum of 7000mAh±, which is enough.”

Which isn’t conclusive, but is heavily suggestive. It seems that the newest versions of the Chinese brand’s Kirin 9000 chipsets are being paired with much larger battery capacities, with designs to put them inside the best of the mid-range. The premium lineup, like the Pura and Mate series, should also see a battery upgrade.

We may even see the first of these appear later this month. The Chinese company has a home-ground event planned for 23 March, which should see it debuting new affordable smartphones. The phones, the Huawei Enjoy 90 Plus and 90 Pro Max, are expected to feature heftier battery capacities. Not quite 7,000mAh, perhaps, but higher than the dominant baseline in recent years.

The phones are supposed to feature Kirin 8000 chipsets, so they’re probably not the ones Digital Chat Station is referencing. But if the middle of the midrange is climbing to a (reported) 6,620mAh battery, 7,000mAh for the bigger boys isn’t a ridiculous speculation.

Huawei’s newly announced Mobile WiFi X is an excellent example of ‘Exactly What It Says On The Tin‘ (click this link with caution). If the image isn’t enough of a giveaway, Huawei’s device is an X-shaped mobile WiFi station. It folds out into its shape when in use, folding flat if you need to take it somewhere.

Provided that ‘somewhere’ is in China. The device has launched as a partnership with China Mobile, but it looks slick enough that we hope they appear over here, too.

Mobile WiFi X, man

Huawei reckons that the Mobile WiFi X isn’t just an interestingly-shaped internet gadget. The cross-shaped standing arrangement apparently helps its sixteen internet antennae to provide better coverage. It’ll provide a 13% stronger signal when unfolded. 13% stronger than what isn’t explained.

The portable internet portal has an upload speed of 1,000Mbps, while downward transfers can peak at 5.3Gbps. There’s a 12,000mAh battery inside, supposedly capable of keeping you streaming without power for twenty hours. It’ll do 24 hours if you’re doing regular internet things.

Part of the internet unit’s makeup is a touchscreen control display, plus thermal measures. A dual-layer graphene layer works with a heat dissipation film to keep the unit cool. The touch display lets users swipe through and tweak settings, view statuses, and see how many devices are connected to Huawei’s hardware.

You’re unlikely to ship one from China, since they’re mostly bundled with data packages, but there are retail versions. The X-shaped hardware isn’t cheap — a price tag of R6,125 (CN¥2,500) is attached. Still, it’d look awfully cool on a desk…

Source (China), via

It’s been a good few years since Huawei’s Mate series saw any action outside of China (not counting its foldables). That changed today with the global launch of the Mate 80 Pro. It’s been even longer since Huawei launched a smartwatch dedicated to runners — enter the new Watch GT Runner 2.

Huawei also had three other wrist-based devices on show at its global launch event in Madrid — the Band 11, Band 11 Pro, and the Watch Ultimate 2 in a new green colourway. The new MatePad Mini and Freebuds Pro 5 round out the Chinese company’s new offerings.

The track is that ‘wei

The Watch GT Runner 2 was the star of the show this time around. That’s not entirely surprising, considering the teaser video the company released earlier this week featuring two-time Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge.

“From pre-race training plans and in-race pacing guidance to post-race achievement sharing, HUAWEI WATCH GT Runner 2 acts as your professional on-wrist coach. Powered by expert data and intelligent algorithms, it delivers a comprehensive, one-stop marathon management experience, supporting users through every breakthrough,” said the company.

Huawei’s stuck a familiar 1.32in 466 x 466 AMOLED display up front, and there’s the customary rotating digital crown and action button on the right side. If you get tired of running, it also supports over 100 other sport tracking modes and 32 hours of battery life for continuous tracking or around a week under “typical” conditions.

While we’re confident the Watch GT Runner 2 will arrive in South Africa in April this year, we don’t yet know exactly when, or how much it will cost when it does. Expect that info later.

More Bands incoming

If you’re not quite as into running as Kipchoge, maybe one of the new Band 11 trackers will suit you better. The Band 11 and Band 11 Pro are less focused on running (although that’s still supported) and geared more towards the casual trainer.

There wasn’t much we didn’t already know about these. And now that they’ve officially launched in Madrid, we’re still waiting on local price and availability. They should be a whole lot less than the Runner 2, however.

If you’re less interested in sports tracking and more concerned with looking grand while playing golf or diving, the green version of the Watch Ultimate 2 might tickle your fancy. We’re less confident that this one will turn up in South Africa, but that shouldn’t stop you from hoping (or importing if you really want one).

The new Mate 80 Pro is (almost) here

After the Runner 2, the Mate 80 Pro launching outside of China was the next big deal of the event. Since the Mate 50 Pro launched in SA in 2022, we’ve only had foldables in the Mate series show up locally. The Mate 80 Pro is set to change that when it eventually arrives. But no telling when that will be just yet.

Huawei have focused on the display and camera hardware with this one. It sports a 6.75in 1,280 x 2,832px 120Hz LTPO OLED display and a Kirin 9030 Pro SoC inside — don’t expect this to support 5G, if the company’s previous global devices are anything to go by.

Its other notable specs are found on the back in the trio of camera sensors. The 50MP main camera features a variable aperture of f/1.4-f/4.0 and OIS, while 48MP periscope telephoto and 40MP ultra-wide sensors round things out.

MatePad Mini and Freebuds Pro 5

The MatePad Mini and Freebuds Pro 5 also saw some time in the spotlight at this event, although not to the same extent as the others. The former features an 8.8in 1,600 x 2,560px OLED screen, along with Huawei’s PaperMatte display technology to reduce eye strain. It also comes with Huawei’s M-Pencil and folio-style cover.

The Freebuds Pro 5 are the company’s latest flagship wireless in-ear headphones. They sport a premium design, a “dual-drive acoustic system”, and up to 38 hours of battery life includingthe case. They also use the latest version of the L2HC codec that supports a 24-bit/48kHz wireless signal for Hi-res streaming.

Whether either of these two will show up in South Africa remains to be seen. But if we were to hazard a guess, the MatePad Mini might, but the buds, probably not.

Huawei stepped confidently back into the professional running arena on 26 February, unveiling the all-new HUAWEI WATCH GT Runner 2 at its Now is Your Run global launch event in Madrid, Spain. Marking the brand’s return to elite running watches after five years, the launch signals a renewed focus on performance-driven innovation.

The event also introduced a line-up of flagship products, including the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro, HUAWEI MatePad Mini, HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro 5, and the HUAWEI Band 11 Series.

Two-time Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge was officially introduced as the global ambassador for HUAWEI WATCH GT Runner.

Together with Huawei, we can reach millions of runners around the world and hopefully impact their lives in a beautiful and positive way.”

HUAWEI WATCH GT Runner 2

At the event, Kipchoge shared his experience of collaborating with Huawei on product development. “I am passionate about sharing my opinions and perspectives to improve the smartwatch experience, not just for elite athletes but for runners all around the world,” he said.

Whether reviewing documents, streaming content, or working on creative projects while travelling, the device is designed for productivity on the move. It serves as a versatile digital companion for professionals, readers, and researchers alike.

Completing the launch line-up, the HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro 5 become the industry’s first wireless earbuds to feature dual-engine AI noise cancellation. Combined with a dual-drive acoustic system, they deliver powerful noise reduction while preserving vocal and instrumental clarity, creating an immersive listening experience.

Last year, Huawei introduced its brand proposition, Now is Yours, reflecting its commitment to building authentic connections with global consumers through a more inclusive and youthful voice. At the Now is Your Run launch event, the partnership with Eliud Kipchoge reinforced Huawei’s ambition to inspire movement and promote healthier lifestyles worldwide.

Looking ahead, Huawei will continue advancing fitness and health innovation, empowering more people to live active, connected, and healthier lives.

Last month, Huawei revealed that it has a new running watch waiting in the wings. It’s expected to detail it this week, but a teaser for the Watch GT Runner 2 — the name is now confirmed — shows off a bit of what the Chinese company plans to unveil on 26 February.

The company has yet to show the actual hardware itself, instead releasing a short video with marathon runner and device consultant Eliud Kipchoge. It’s a proper teaser, promising detailed running expertise in the upcoming smartwatch while giving almost nothing away.

Watch the Watch GT Runner 2

Still, it’s a step in the right direction (the track is thataway). Huawei’s UK YouTube account shows off a little more, even if it’s only the upcoming Marathon Mode. A brief video shows what the Watch GT Runner 2’s iconography will look like on the display. It’s possible that the animations shown will actually appear as represented, but it looks to us like it was amped up for social media/advertising purposes. There’s a level of whimsy there you don’t often find in mass-market software.

Also coming to Huawei’s 26 February reveal in Madrid this year are the Band 11 Pro (and the Band 11). Much of the Band 11’s details we already know. The company’s new Mate 80 Pro, FreeBuds Pro 5, and MatePad Mini are also expected to make an appearance. We should see… two out of three here at home, if we were to guess.

The Watch GT 6 Pro is about to get one more tracking feature, thanks to something the Chinese company calls Diabetes Risk Study.

Announced at the World Health Expo in Dubai, the “24/7 blood sugar monitoring feature” has launched for the GT 6 Pro and Huawei’s rather more unusual Watch D2. The latter device also features blood-pressure monitoring as its main function.

Using a health expo and Instagram as the main avenues for announcing a new feature is an unusual step, but whatever gets the job done, we suppose. It uses the device’s photoplethysmography (a word we’re never going to attempt to pronounce) tech, plus feedback from other onboard sensors to perform non-invasive glucose monitoring. How well it works remains to be seen, but Huawei obviously reckons it’s fantastic.

Measurement takes between three and fourteen days of constant monitoring. Conveniently, the latter is at the upper limit of the Watch GT 6 Pro’s battery life. Once it’s done measuring — rest heart-rate plays a large role, apparently — users are given a rating. A result of either Low, Medium, or High is obtained. If it’s medium or high risk, the watch’s software will advise wearers to consult a doctor.

It’s not just the Watch GT 6 Pro getting some anti-diabetes action. Other, unspecified models will also get the feature at a later date.

Companies often file trademarks for things they might do. When a company like Huawei files for a mark like Huawei Energy, though, it’s heavily suggestive of the Chinese firm having yet another direction to explore.

That direction could, if the trademarks for Huawei Energy and Huawei Digital Energy are awarded (and probably even if they’re not), involve power solutions in addition to the company’s heavy enterprise presence. According to a report, the company’s new trademarks “are awaiting substantive examination.”

Big Huawei Energy

If we do see new Huawei spin-offs, they could involve battery storage, green energy, and even vehicle batteries, if the report from CNMO is accurate. A Huawei-powered EV isn’t out of the question. The Chinese heavyweight fields enough outdoor tech that battery storage and even solar panels would be a sensible course to pursue. After all, it all translates into revenue streams, even as it makes the company’s supply chain cheaper.

The company seems to be using the Digital Energy term internally, as a blanket descriptor for whatever that division is up to. It’s still murky for now, but rumours that CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co.) was looking to buy out that division suggest that Huawei is heavily focused on battery tech.

China-based CATL is the largest producer of energy storage in the world, so if they’re eying what Huawei is up to, it’s probably linked. As it happens, rumour also claims that a complete buyout isn’t happening. Instead, CATL is looking to acquire about 20% of whatever Huawei is doing in this sector.

Huawei-branded power stations and more self-sufficient network gear from the company probably aren’t far off. Maybe. We’ll see.

Huawei intends to launch a new-generation running watch, though the company hasn’t quite said what it will entail. The information about the watch, the first since the unveiling of its Watch GT Runner in 2021, comes via an announcement that the Chinese entity has partnered up with marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge and the dsm-firmenich Running Team.

It’s mentioned almost as an aside, which you’d expect from a release talking about human people. Huawei is “set to unveil a cutting-edge professional running watch,” its first in five years. While the company is vague, it’s also looking to impress anyone in the market for a new running watch.

Huawei going far?

We’ve stripped out most of the PR-speak from the company’s flowery assertions about the still-unannounced device, and this is what it claimed: It’ll use Huawei’s latest TruSense tracking, plus the company’s Sunflower global positioning system. This’ll allow more accurate tracking across the board (“represents a quantum leap in positioning accuracy,” is how the company describes its GPS upgrade).

It apparently features 97% tracking accuracy when estimating race completion times. That’s easy to do towards the end of a race, less simple in the opening minutes where the jostling happens.

It seems that it won’t be targeted only at high-end runners, for all the input runners like Kipchoge and Joshua Cheptegei are supposed to have contributed. This running wearable intends to “[bridge] the gap between high-end functionality and user-friendly design.” It sounds, more or less, like Huawei’s current fitness software with more of a running focus. That shouldn’t be hard to do — the company recently went all-in on golf. Pounding the pavement is a far cheaper activity. That means more potential buyers.

Beyond its existence, the Chinese company’s plans for the unnamed running watch are a total mystery. At a guess, we’d say that it’ll fall under the Watch GT category. As for an announcement, price, or launch date? All unknown, for now. But as soon as the invites go out, we’ll let you know.

This year, Huawei South Africa is celebrating 25 years of being part of the country’s technology journey. Over the past quarter of a century, Huawei South Africa has grown alongside the digital landscape, supporting how people connect, work, create and live through technology.

From building the networks that keep our country connected to designing consumer devices used every day. Huawei’s focus has remained the same, making advanced technology accessible and meaningful for all South Africans.

A long-standing presence built on connection

Since establishing its South African operations, Huawei has worked closely with local operators, enterprises and partners to strengthen national connectivity. Today, Huawei’s supported networks serve nearly 80% of the South African population, enabling everything from everyday communication to digital services that underpin business, education and entertainment.

This long-term presence has allowed Huawei to develop a deep understanding of the local market, ensuring that the solutions and devices it brings to South Africa are relevant to both local needs and lifestyles.

Innovation that shows up in everyday life

While much of Huawei’s work happens behind the scenes in networks and infrastructure, its impact is most visible in the hands of consumers. Over the years, Huawei has introduced a wide range of smartphones, tablets and wearables designed to balance performance, design and reliability.

This commitment to consumer-centric innovation has made Huawei the leading brand in wearables in South Africa with smartwatches and fitness devices that seamlessly fit into everyday routines, from workdays to workouts.

Marking the milestone with a birthday celebration

To celebrate 25 years in South Africa, Huawei South Africa is running a special birthday promotion across selected consumer products. Shoppers can enjoy discounts of up to R10,000 on popular devices, including the HUAWEI Pura 80 Series, the HUAWEI nova 14 Series, the HUAWEI Watch GT 6 Series and the HUAWEI MatePad Series. Ts and Cs Apply.

The HUAWEI Pura 80 Series is built for users who value premium design and advanced photography, combining both powerful imaging capabilities with smooth everyday performance. The HUAWEI nova 14 Series offers a balance of style and performance, making it well-suited to social, entertainment and day-to-day use.
