Samsung announced its Galaxy Tab S10 FE lineup at the beginning of last month with little local fanfare. That was expected, since South Africa wasn’t on the initial launch list. That has changed, with the new lot of ‘affordable’ Android tablets making landfall here at last.

And pricing isn’t particularly ridiculous either. We expected them to match the Galaxy Tab S9 FE in terms of pricing. Samsung, somehow, is launching the new range for less than the expected R13,000 starting price.

Control alt Tab S10 FE

Part of this might be limited launch pricing, which also sees buyers snagging either a set of the Galaxy Buds 3 or a Smart Book Cover at no extra cost. The Galaxy Tab S10 FE (Wi-Fi, 8GB/128GB) starts at R12,000, with the 5G version costing R13,000. The Tab S10 FE+ models will run customers either R15,000 (Wi-Fi) or R16,000 (5G). Even the higher-end pricing falls below Stuff‘s original R17,000 guesstimate.

The pricing and combo offer — buyers will have to redeem their secondary accessory through the Samsung Members portal on its website — are valid from today until 30 June. Whether the price will tick up to match the Tab S9 FE’s previous pricing isn’t known.

We ran down the specs for these tablets extensively when they were first announced (you can read more here), but, as expected, Samsung is leaning hard on the AI features being brought to the range. Circle to Search, improved handwriting and mathematics support in the excellent Samsung Notes app, and a collection of image modification features make up the bulk of these.

Those who opt for the Smart Book Cover will also have a dedicated Galaxy AI key on their keyboard to summon the all-seeing-and-often-functional AI overlord that lives inside their tablet.

Samsung typically makes a big deal of many of its product launches. The official reveal of the Galaxy Tab S10 FE (which stands for ‘Fan Edition’, if you’re new here) doesn’t merit quite as much fanfare. But it’s still official, following extensive leaks earlier this year.

One of the headline features for the new semi-affordable Android tablets is the inclusion of “intelligent experiences”, Samsung’s way of saying that some Galaxy AI bits have crept in despite the hardware down-step. This is further enhanced if buyers stick on one of the company’s new Book Cover Keyboard peripherals, since that incorporates a “Galaxy AI Key”.

The Tab S10 FE’s copilot

Features like Google’s Circle to Search, Samsung’s new Best Face (which searches multiple images for the best facial expressions), Solve Math (guess what that does), Object Eraser (it does the opposite of adding stuff to your pics), and Auto Trim (an automatic video reel creator) are included in the new Tab S10 FE lineup. There are two tablets inbound — the base model and then the Galaxy Tab S10 FE Plus.

Both share most features — Exynos 1580 processors, 8GB/128GB or 12GB/256GB configurations, a 12MP front and 13MP rear camera, and identical connectivity and waterproofing ratings — IP68, naturally. The differences come in on the screen and battery front. Because, well, the Tab S10 FE Plus has more space to stick those. The ‘basic’ model has a 10.9in 90Hz display and an 8,000mAh battery. The Plus plumps for a 13.1in screen and a 10,090mAh battery, but both models share screen performance details. Since this is an FE model, that refresh rate only goes up to 90Hz.

Despite the official announcement, there’s no local pricing for the range in South Africa. Yet. Don’t go into it expecting too much of a bargain, though. The previous lineup starts locally at R13,000 for the Tab S9 FE and climbs to R17,000 for the Tab S9 FE Plus 5G. “Select markets” have begun receiving Samsung’s hardware as of today — SA probably isn’t too far behind.

Samsung learned half a decade ago that devices sell more if the word ‘Lite’ is removed from its name. That’s why we’ve got the Galaxy Tab S10 FE and its similarly named brethren heading to a retail store near you. As is usual with the South Korean company, there’s seemingly nothing like infosec taking place around its existence.

That’s my Quandt

A Bluesky account that shuttles between leaking tech details and complaining about the current state of America (so… just a regular Bluesky account, then) has posted details of the Tab S10 FE and Tab S10 FE+, two devices that are expected but not yet confirmed for launch anywhere.

The account, helmed by one Roland Quandt (via GSMArena), has dropped screen and storage details for Samsung’s upcoming FE refresh. The Galaxy Tab S10 FE is supposed to pack a 10.9in display, while the Galaxy Tab S10 FE+ will scale that up to 13.1in. Both devices will feature 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.

Read More: Samsung updates local Galaxy Watches with irregular heart rhythm and sleep apnea features

That’s it as this entirely unsubstantiated claim goes but it’s also wholly believable for folks who follow Samsung around all day. Samsung’s control of its internal supply chain makes these specs very possible, while earlier leaks speaking about Exynos 1580 processor innard for both, 12MP front-facing cameras, and 5G/WiFi-only models are also probably on the money. All that’s missing is a launch date and an image or two but those are due.

The Tab S9 FE, which still starts at R13,000, first appeared in 2023. A two-year gap is about right in terms of the development cycle and since Samsung is a creature of habit, we can probably expect a launch sometime in October this year. If everything goes the same way it did the last time Samsung refreshed this range, there won’t be much of a show around the launch of its mid-range tablet hardware.
