It’s clear the biggest streaming service in the world, Netflix is pushing hard to get more diverse content onto the world stage that is TV. It is investing in locally created content from around the world, instead of pushing the Hollywood agenda we’ve been used to for some time.

With that, we’re elated to see that the second proudly African Netflix Original series will come to the platform on 20 May. Blood & Water follows the exploits of the intelligent, proactive and impulsive 16-year-old Puleng Khumalo. The female lead plans a transfer to an elite school to investigate the 17-year-old cold case of her older sister, who was abducted at birth.

“In the search, Puleng meets beautiful, alluring Fikile “Fiks’’ Bhele from a nearby private school, played by Khosi Ngema starring in her debut role. ” Netflix details in a press release.

The series will also feature some familiar faces, including Ama Qamata (featured in Gomora, My Perfect Family, Rhythm City), Natasha Thahane (as seen in Skeem Saam, The Queen), Gail Mabalane (from The Road, The Wild), Cindy Mahlangu (also in The Queen, The Heard), Thabang Molaba (in The Queen), Arno Greeff (from Binnelanders) and Dillon Windvogel (also in DanZ).

Blood & Water isn’t a typical coming-of-age drama series, as it’ll play off in the mother city Cape Town and features some mystery and case-solving realness. The series debuts on the Netflix streaming platform around the world on 20 May.
