Sony caves – You’ll soon be able to play cross-platform Fortnite with all your friends

Sony is finally enabling cross-play for Fortnite today. Yup. Really.

The PlayStation 4 manufacturer previously blocked cross-play and progression between PS4 and Nintendo Switch and Xbox One for massively popular battle royale game, Fortnite. People were angry — like real angry — because you couldn’t link a Epic Games account that’s previously been linked to a PS4, to a Nintendo Switch. Which means many players had to create new accounts.

What’s worse is that you couldn’t join in a friendly game of Last Man Standing with friends who play either on Xbox, Switch or Mac (PC cross play was already available though). With the release of a brand new cross-platform open beta test from today, specifically for Fortnite, those problems should disappear.

“We recognise that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution,” said Sony’s PlayStation chief John Kodera in a blog post. “The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems.”

Sony has previously blocked cross-play between PS4 and Xbox One for Fortnite, Rocket League, and Minecraft, despite Nintendo and Microsoft supporting it. Hopefully this new beta signals a new dawn where Sony allows PlayStation gamers to play with their friends — wherever they are. It sounds like it. Kodera also said, “This represents a major policy change for SIE, and we are now in the planning process across the organization to support this change.”

Which leaves only one last request from our side: Please go easy on us poor console players, PC gamers. Till we get a mouse and keyboard of our very own (and approximately 200 hours of practise), that is.
